King Cross Christian Centre programmes in London

King Cross Christian Centre is located at a church in central London. The drop-in centre that is run by the charity provides short term support as well as advice to the vulnerable. Whether it is an emergency parcel of food or a piece of clothing, the church may be able to provide assistance.

Dozens of people drop in each week for a free, hot meal. This service takes place on both Monday and Tuesday from 11 am – 2 pm. While the aim is to serve additional meals at different times of the week as well, this will depend on volunteers to prepare and serve them. Anyone that is hungry or homeless can drop in on those two days.

At other days of the week the volunteers will provide an emergency box of food. The King Cross Christian Centre will provide this to the vulnerable. The aim is to feed a family for a few days and hopefully signpost them to long term support. The church is an independent food bank in London and do not partner with other groups. However they do rely on donations as well as volunteers to keep this service running.

Each month the charity may serve more than 100 families from the foodbank. The contents of a box will depend on those donations. But the church may give them fruits, baby nappies, vegetables, tinned meats, milk, and more. This can also be combined with a hot meal from their soup kitchen on Monday or Tuesday.

King Cross Christian Centre housing assistance programmes range from shelter in a hostel or tenancy sustainment. The help from the charity for people threatened by homelessness will mostly come in the form of referrals.

Sustaintment is a scheme is which those tenants facing an eviction can get free advice. Volunteers from the Christian Centre will visit families that are local to central London. At this session, the tenant can get information on everything from applying to housing benefits to advice on how the discretionary housing payments (DHP) work when it comes to rent arrears. They also just offer emotional support.

The homeless in central London can also receive help. King Cross Christian Centre partners with several other churches in the region. They operate either a shelter (that is at at a different location each week) or the volunteers will signpost the homeless person to a hostel. One example of this is the Cold Weather Shelter, and more information is at 07913 020738.

Many of this temporary lodgings / hostels are shared housing sites. In general, Kings Cross may be able to help as many as 20 people at one time by placing them into a hostel. The location will have bedrooms, laundry, and other services for the family.

At this temporary facility, King Cross Christian Centre will ensure the jobless and other gain the skills they need to live independently. This can take weeks or months, but the volunteers will be there during the process. All of the advice will meet the standards of the Quality Standard Mark. Then, when they are ready to leave, the client can apply for rent deposit help in London.

Other assistance is also available for families on a low income. Or if someone is from the area they support and is facing a crisis, they can also stop by for counselling or just a meal. The drop in of Kings Cross is at Vernon Square, London, WC1X 9EW. Ring the church at 020 7837 3976 for more information.
