Rental aid programmes operating in Scottish Borders

Rental arrears and other urgent problems can cause serious financial harm to a family. To meet this challenge and reduce the causes of homelessness, several aid agencies provide emergency rental assistance to individuals, couples and families of Scottish Borders.

Homeless statistics in Scottish Borders are in line with the rest of the UK. About 2% of the population seeks help with rent just through the Council each year. Combined with those who seek aid from charities and lenders, the numbers are higher than many would anticipate.

The causes for housing crises vary, but they tend to be made worse by debt. Divorce and job loss are a couple of big contributors to possible homelessness. These agencies collaborate to meet the demand for rental assistance across the communities of the Scottish Borders.

Shelter

The Shelter Scottish Borders Advice Service provide specialised counselling service to address financial problems that directly affect tenancy.

The agency does a lot more than just provide free advice services. Direct referrals can often provide tenants with much needed support for making their rent payments. Mortgagors are also welcome, which is significant in that the financial problems by landlords could result in issues for the tenant also.

To schedule a housing counselling appointment, call 0344 515 2422. Hours are limited.

Council

The Scottish Borders Council does provide an advice service for permanent residents. In addition to a counselling interview, residents may also access the various relief programmes that are funding through the Council.

  • The Homeless Team provides access to direct counselling as well as referrals to all of the aid that is available. Having a direct line towards possible aid from a knowledgeable agent is essential when dealing with a rent crisis.
  • A homeless assessment could lead to placement into favourable rental situations.
  • Rent arrears can be corrected through carefully selected outcomes.
  • Screening for benefits can lead to rental assistance grants received on a monthly basis.

Housing Options Officers are available for consultations in Duns, Eyemouth, Galashiels, Hawick, Jedburgh, Kelso and Peebles. Call 01896 661 385 to set an appointment.

Fresh Start Borders

One local charity provides support for struggling tenants who are moving into a new rental property. When funds are tight, Fresh Start Borders gives away starter packs of household goods and other essentials.

Volunteers gather items for the purpose of providing these care packages to those who cannot afford all of the costs associated with a move. By combining these aid packages with rent deposit guarantees from the Council, a new tenant has lots of support towards their fresh start. Call 01750 62219 to enquire about obtaining a starter pack for your needs.
