Money raised for Christmas meals for homeless in Glasgow and Edinburgh

In a bit of good news, the homeless in Edinburgh and also the city of Glasgow will be able to eat a hot Christmas meal this year, and it will be provided to them for free. Social Bite, the area sandwich shop with multiple locations, has organized the community and thousands of people have donated money in an effort to spread the joy this holiday.

After a plea was made for the donation programme, thousands of people stepped forward and contributed to it. It is great to see the community pull together. As a result of this, thousands of vouchers were bought by people, at £5 each, and this will now allow thousands of homeless people to be fed.

The company that took the lead to organise the event, Social Bite, not only serves sandwiches as part of their business, but the company, which was co-founded by Josh Littlejohn and Alice Thompson, helps the vulnerable as well. They provide all of their profits on a daily basis to charities and the services they offer those in poverty. Not only that, but they employ currently or formerly homeless people in their shops and are actively involved in recruiting them, and in fact about 25 per cent of their staff were homeless in the past.

Anyone can donate at any time. A relatively small amount of £5 will provide for a free, hot meal at Christmas for a homeless person, and it also even pays for a coffee or other warm drink for them. The meals can be served to children, the elderly people, and disabled as well, if they are without a home or sleeping rough. While thousands of vouchers have been sold already, including 7000 in the first several hours, more contributions are always appreciated.

If someone is homeless and needs a meal, they can contact Social Bite. There will be locations open on Christmas Day in Edinburgh on Rose Street. Also, the site in Glasgow on St Vincent Street will also be open and serving food on Christmas Eve to the needy. So there are several locations the homeless will be able to use, and they can select the store that is most convenient to them.

Since the community has been so generous in buying thousands of vouchers, or meals, it is not known if they will all be served during the holiday season. So if there more vouchers left over after the Christmas season, then Social Bite will carry the programme over into the next year and the homeless can get free food then.
