Grants for disabled in South Derbyshire pay moving costs

Assistance in paying for moving costs is available for the disabled in South Derbyshire from a relocation grant. This is aimed at helping households whose property does not meet the standards they need it to in order to be satisfactory for their disability. There are funds of up to £10,000 available for both individuals who rent their home or that own their property.

The District Council created this grant programme in an effort to help people on a low income that have either a physical or mental disability. They too should be able to live in safe and qualify accommodations, and the funds from the council will help ensure this occurs be assisting with costs such as a rent deposit on a new property.

The aim is to assist those who can’t modify their current home for their needs. So for these individuals, the grant will be used to help them move into a new, permanent accommodation. The funds from the South Derbyshire Council can help pay for costs such as a rent deposit, fees due to a solicitor, any rent in advance if moving into a flat, and even any bills for a utility connection. Other moving costs may also be paid for, but the council will need to provide the applicant information on what is covered.

Application process for a grant

To apply, contact the South Derbyshire District Council – Private Sector Housing Department. The address is at Civic Offices, Civic Way, Swadlincote, Derbyshire. More terms are below, or ring them at 01283 595713 or email is adaptations@south-derbys.gov.uk for more information. if this moving scheme is not available, or not qualified, then find other ways to get financial help for the disabled.

The applicant needs to discuss the new home with their doctor or occupational therapist. If this is not possible, then the case worker they have for this process can be consulted. They need to agree that the current home can’ be made suitable for the disabled person. Or, if the individual is requesting the grant to relocate, then they need to agree that the new property being moved into will be meet their needs.

The relocation grant can also help families with a disabled child. They will usually need to under the age of 16. In these cases the applicant’s income can be higher and not all of the same criteria in the means test will apply.

Any funds from the South Derbyshire Council are only for households that are low income. The limits in place for the relocation programme are the same as for the Disabled Facilities Grant, which is also provided by the council. In addition, the new home or flat being moved into needs to be local, and be in the district of South Derbyshire. So the person can’t be moving to another city or part of the UK.

If found to be qualified, up to £10,000 will be provided from the scheme. It will pay for the costs indicated above, such as estate agent’s fees, deposits or rent in advance, and similar expenses. It can also help pay for furniture, appliances, new carpets, and other more practical items to help ensure a successful tenancy. In some cases, the person with a physical disability can also use funds provided by a local charity to help in the move process, so the grant can be combined with other aid.

The person also needs to live in the new property for at least 5 years. If this condition from the South Derbyshire Council is not met then they will need to repay the funds. Also, if the application is falsified in anyway then the council will also require repayment of the grant.
