St Wilfrids Centre services in South Yorkshire

The St Wilfrid’s Centre provides services to anyone in Sheffield that is on a low income. Clients come from all backgrounds. People that drop in at the centre may have disabilities or mental health issues, and even substance misusers can get support. They both address long term needs from the Personal Development service and provide short term, practical support.

The centre is located in Sheffield and open 5 days per week to the entire region. Anyone can drop in for a meal or other items that may be provided, based on donations. The charity will offer that short term support for overall wellbeing, but the aim is to help the client gain stability.

The end result of programmes such as Personal Development and others will be more independence for the client. It will also even generally increase the individual’s confidence too so they will feel better about pursuing employment. Increased confidence can lead the person to other future success too.

Information on welfare is also available from staff at St Wilfrid’s. This is service for the homeless or residents that are vulnerable. Each request is assessed based on merit. The advice is free and confidential, and the process to get assistance as well as what may be offered is below. The aim is to give help with accessing various government services.

The homeless in Sheffield will be given a free hot meal. The welfare team will also try to place them into a shelter. The next step after that will be for the homeless person to tackle the hardship which lead to them being on the street, and the team will help with that as well.

Staff will will then meet with the person regularly as part of a holistic process to addressing the crisis. At the end of this process, the welfare team will assist with applying for housing benefits or try to locate social housing in South Yorkshire. If the homeless person is not ready for this, then additional support will be given to them first.

Practical support, including meals and snacks from the cafe, are served Monday through Friday. There will be a low cost involved for this service. Other support needs can be access to a laundry, shower, and even haircuts. This service is for both the homeless and other in Sheffield that are in poverty.

Personal Development is for the vulnerable. The programme has dozens of people going through it each year. It addresses a number of workshops, such as life-skills, job training, and help for people with an addiction. There are also classes on literacy and numeracy held.

The centre is open to all. Some people are referred from not-for-profit agencies or councils around the city of Sheffield, while others just turn up at the door for assistance. The location will assist people in either instance. If the centre can’t help, then the team will advise them to other agencies in South Yorkshire. The St Wilfrids location is at 524 Queens Road, Sheffield, S2 4DT, phone 0114 255 5720.
