Julian Trust Night Shelter programmes in Bristol

The Julian Trust Night Shelter location in Bristol provides the homeless and those that are struggling with emergency accommodation, information, clothing, and free hot meals. Many of the homeless in Bristol are faced with loneliness, poverty, illness, or they can’t cope with the other basic demands of life. The location was created to help them. It is also known as the Bristol Night Shelter and it is located in Little Bishop Street.

Approximately 20 guests can stay at the Night shelter. It is open up to five days a week. The location provides them with other facilities as well, including use of a shower, toilet, kitchen, laundry, and access to a dining area. Some guests may be able to receive free clothing or food boxes.

While the number of rough sleepers and homeless people that use the shelter is limited to about 20 per night, it also provides free hot meals to almost 100 guests every single night between the hours of 9 and 10pm. Those guests who stay overnight will also be provided a free hot breakfast the next morning as well as the use of a laundry if it is needed. Most of this depends on the amount of donations from the community.

Guests of the Julian Trust Night Shelter will also be able to participate in weekly visits from the St John Ambulance and St Mungos Outreach workers who are based in Bristol. They will help them with employment and health care if needed. All of this is available in addition to the emergency accommodation and other items noted above.

For many that are roofless, Julian Trust and the other organisations offers them the basic needs of food, human contact, and warmth. It gives the guests and emergency bed for the night. It helps those that are dealing with unemployment, mental health issues, bereavement, or other challenges. There are also no questions to be answered or forms to fill in. The shelter has an open door policy for those that are roofless.

Caring at Christmas is also part of services from the Julian Trust Night Shelter. The center will be open for up to 10 days, 24 hours a day. During this Christmas period, seasonal entertainment, free meals, and food are provided to guests and the homeless. The Bristol City Council will also allow more guests to stay overnight during this time frame.

Information is available as well. The Night Shelter works with homeless agencies in Bristol and nearby areas. Some of the other services that are sometimes provided at the Julian Night Shelter include information on chiropody, health screening and even flu vaccinations.

Almost 50 other agencies in Bristol work with the Julian Trust in assisting the homeless. Together they work to provide emergency shelter, meals, and basic first stage accommodation. The agencies want to get people off the streets and into safe housing.

Many of these other agencies and organisations try to both assess and solve the long-term needs for health care, housing, addiction counselling or employment training where appropriate. So guests of the shelter can use these different services that are available in Bristol.

As noted above, volunteers and staff from the Julian Trust networks with the following organisations in the area. They include The Salvation Army Lifehouse, St Mungos Outreach Team, Methodist Day Centre, The Crisis Centre, Inner City Mental Health Team, and the Advice centres. There are several other organisations that network with the Julian Trust Night Shelter, and guests can get more information at the site.
