Fife food banks & drop-in hot meals

Fife Council routinely refers clients who need extra help to one of the area food banks. This allows citizens without extra money to obtain the food their families so desperately need.

As is becoming more the norm throughout the UK, demand for aid from food pantries is booming. People of Fife are finding that many of the economic opportunities that sustained the region in the past simply are not there.

Benefit cuts and JSA sanctions are having such an impact on local families that they suddenly find themselves in the position where they have no money left to use for food purchases. Hundreds of people would go hungry every week if they did not have access to emergency donations that are collected by the charities and volunteers that run these food banks of Fife.

Benarty Food Bank distributes valuable food aid to people who are referred by one of several community organisations. Referring partners include Citizens Advice Fife, Fife Council, Frontline Fife, Health Visitors, Home Start, Jobcentre Plus and the Scottish Welfare Fund Team. Food parcels may be picked up by those holding a voucher that has been provided by one of these partners. The location is in the Crosshill Community Centre in Lochgelly, though BRAG Business Centre on Main Street has also expressed support. Since opening in early 2014, operations have expanded from one day to three days weekly.

Cowdenbeath Food Bank is one of the newest centres to come to Fife. The Fountain Meeting Rooms in Broad Street were set as the location where residents may pick up helpful donations. A call ahead is necessary to confirm times and days of operation.

The Trussell Trust was instrumental in opening Cupar Foodbank. This location is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Referring agencies include Citizens Advice and Rights Fife (CARF), Cupar Social Work office, Fife Council, Fife Voluntary Action, Frontline Fife and North East Fife Credit Union.
